A 90th Birthday Celebration
Granny Hudson’s for Sunday Lunch
After morning service at First Baptist Church, There’s no better place to be than Granny Hudson’s for Sunday lunch. It starts with a “y’all comin’ out?” And ends with a “boys, clean it out!” Everyone’s welcome, the food is in plenty. Whether blood relative or not, Granny is a granny to many. Her cooking is like none other; she has a lifetime of experience. But above all else, love is her main ingredient. She provides food for her household each Sunday on this day of rest. Her worth is far above rubies; her children rise up and call her blessed. Everyone pitches in to bring the spread. Bring an extra bag of rolls. What’s that smell? Did we burn the bread? In the kitchen, the ladies make final preparations. The men debate how the Vols can enjoy more touchdown celebrations. The Titans game is on; maybe they’ll pull it out this week. Now it’s time to line up as Granny says, “y’all come on, let’s eat.” We laugh at the memory while fixing plates, Of when as soon as Mr. Hudson would get his, he’d announce, “let’s pray.” Every seat is available except this one. Out of respect, save this spot for Granny Hudson. Next to her was where Mr. Hudson would always eat. Sitting there makes you pause to consider his legacy. Food, fun, fellowship at the table, Memories are being made. Who wants seconds? I think I’m able. Cleanup is underway; folks are getting up from the table. Save for a few of us cleaning up the rest of Granny’s famous apples. Lunch is over; let’s shuffle to the living room. Relax, get comfortable. Dessert’s comin’ soon. Some rock on the front porch as the kids are running around. Others are looking for the needle in the Country magazine. It’ll soon be found. Some drift off to sleep, grab a little snooze. Others get to work when Granny says, “I’ve got a job for you.” Rain or shine, good or bad weather. Each Sunday is special, family and friends sharing their lives together. It’s soon time for evening service at First Baptist Church. Praise God for yet another great day at Granny Hudson’s for Sunday lunch.
