San Francisco, Alcatraz Island

Okay, my apologies up front -- I didn't realize that I was going to choose 79 pictures from my trip to Alcatraz...but I was so taken by the history and awe of it all that I took a lot!  Enjoy!  I went with another nurse on this trip -- we took the self guided tour with headphones and actually got to hear prisoner interviews, warden interviews and jail chants -- which pretty much gave me the creeps!

Pretty sure not too many people smiled this big when walking through this gate -- but I was so excited!!

The Shower Room

These are the scars on the floors from the grenades that were tossed in during the 1946 Escape attempt.

The Old Warden's House

San Francisco was a lot colder and foggier than I had expected, but it made for some beautiful shots!!

This kind of grossed me out so I had to take this -- this is coming back into the prison from the courtyard -- that is the actual stain of the hand prints of the prisoners as they came back inside.  There is no telling what germs and types of people touched that mark!

The Great Escape...with the heads that the prisoners created to fake out the guards.

The Mess Hall

They said that they outlined on the walls where each knife belonged so that they would immediately know if one was missing.  Scary much??
