The Gingerbread Village

As some of you may know, every year my mom, my sisters and myself have a tradition of a gingerbread house competition every Thanksgiving. Well, my sister Megan had a car wreck before Thanksgiving this year where she broke her wrist and so we pushed the competition to the Christmas holiday. Usually, this is a fun activity for our little family -- but this year was a disaster!! However, every disaster can be a learning experience!! :) Here is what we learned this year....
Rule #1: Do one house! Not a gingerbread village like Zachary picked out for this year. It takes a lot of patience to one of these with a five year old -- but to have to design five just flat out takes your patience away! :)
Rule #2: Have a back up plan in case your icing doesn't work! Our icing was a mess and wouldn't hold anything together. Plus, it wouldn't squeeze out into any lines, so I had to spread it out on the gingerbread cookies with my fingers...which took forever!!!
Rule #3: Don't try this when you are coming down with the flu!

(Smiles for the camera! Can you tell I'm gritting my teeth?)

After sitting for five long hours trying to get these things put together, I recruited Nathan for help when he got home from work. He was a trooper!

Rule #4 -- Hide the decorations from Eli!

And Rule #5: Remember that while some things might seem exhausting and not worth it to you as a parent....always remember why you are doing it in the first place!!...Because he loves it so much!!

...And that little boys is worth any type of extra fun that I can offer!! :)
